Hi this is my first post
Built during the days from Christmas and New Year 2008
It is a hybrid
1) turbo oven heat source, However a heat gun can also be used
2) Bean mass suspended in centre of chamber and is height adjustible
3) Fan forced action for even distribution of heat
4) Beans are in a perforated insert again for even heat distribution also the chaff will fall through the insert holes and collect in bottom of pot
5) Small footprint as it fits under the BBQ in the storage cupboard
6) Agitator is powered by a car window winder motor @ 42 rpm

Now onwards to do my first roast

I have a compilation of the build however if other photos are required please don't hesitate to ask

Thermocouple yet to be fitted

One mod I am forced to make due to some smaller bean varieties tend to get caught, or fall through the insert holes as the holes are a little to large

I intend putting another diffuser on the bottom of the insert to stop this from happening

Fantastic concepts! I love the idea of perforations and airflow through the beans. I've considered perforating the hopper in my breadmaker to allow the same airflow.

I do have one question about your sitrrer. From the picture, it looks like the thin cross section stirs the beans instead of the large flat part (see diagram). Does it mix the beans well?

Thanks for posting this beast!

Yes Chad it works a treat
It depends on the amount of beans you want to stir but in general it works like this
The lower portion of the design causes a welling of the beans
The beans are forced to spin and go through the open section and over the top when it dams up through to the other side
If you notice the design is full diameter on one side and 3/4 on the other
I think it gives it more balance and does not turn the beans to fast and furious to overload the design

The centre section is a socket reducer (from a cheap set) under is 1/2" top is 1/4"
I removed the ball bearing and drilled it through and bolted the wings on
Its like Mecano you can change it any time with ease if it doesn't work

I did however get a few ideas from your set up
Will I get more control with heat if I raise the bean mass closer to the the turbo

Thanks for the interest

I started with a tall pot too and kept cutting it down which increased batch size. Smaller area to heat and less area to lose heat.

Hence the question
I can raise the roast bean mass closer to the turbo heater element by 2 inches by adding an extension to the drive shaft and lifting the two half moon brackets
And or this as well
A friend can get me some 1/4" aluminium plate off cuts for free
So I will make a false bottom rather than cut the pot down

Ideally I want to roast 600 grams comfortably but at the moment in the first roast I could manage 450 grams without to much trouble but may be the comfortable limit

Time to tweak c:1
Will report back on the next roast with height adjustment

But for the moment enjoy a picture of the first roast

that should help. I think your element is the 1200w size so 600gr. is a good amount for that amount of heat. The false bottom will give you a layer of insulation too.

Thanks farmroast as I really felt that the volume of the pot was to large
you have answered and confirmed what my gut feelings told me.
It is not easy to get a large diameter pot that is also shallow
My turbo oven is rated 1200 - 1400w

Do you have a drawing of your chaff remover / catcher
I have a design on one now but would like to see how you made yours

Many thanks

your local bakers store should have a goodly supply of cake pans in diameters up to like 24" and depths of 2 to four inches.
They work great but being aluminum they bleed heat faater then some people go thru money.

if life seems normal your not going fast enough!

Thanks dja

I did consider the baking pans/tins but found them to shallow

However I did use a baking tin for another purpose if you look at the build compilation (6) photos on the centre left image you will see that I cut the bottom of a round baking pan to act as a guide and to act as a self centreing device for the removable bean roasting insert so it can find the agitator shaft first time & every time

Chad I know you have been interested on the agitator progress

Just putting up a simple mod for the agitator
The basic design works perfectly
However on some small roasts some beans have a tendency to rest on the flat surface of the top
I have noticed that if the volume of beans is 300 gr or below when I do sample testing, the beans don't overflow and occasionally some will rest on top
This is not a problem on larger quantities as the volume of the bean mass goes over and pushes all before them

The mod was made with a little sheet aluminium that is thin enough to be cut with scissors but strong (it is about 1/3 of a mm)

All I did was to shape it and fold it under

Now it looks like it came straight out of Star Trek Wink

Hire James Cameron (or Tim Burton if you prefer) and let's see the full length version!

Very nice sneek peek. The perforations and airflow concept is just outstanding!

I have completed all the tests for the roaster and have reached my goal for 600grams of green beans

I am confident that it will roast up to 750grams in its current configuration (pot volume reduced by 1/3 with an insulated false bottom)

I am also confident that if I reduce the pot volume to half from the original the roaster will be capable to roast 1kg (2 pounds)

Just roasted today
600 grams of Kenya Ritti AA
Camera set on Macro and flash on
This is a beautiful and even roast
I also got goose bumps and a feeling of WOW what a roast
See photo

Also here is a link of another short 20 sec video on how the components fit together

NOTE
I have uploaded 4 short videos so to see all of them just click other videos from this user to view all
Most only go 30-35 seconds

I have learnt that the video quality degrades if one zooms in so I have to redo some others that did not make the cut Cool

Enjoy the video via this link
