Bulk Buys... What's your take?

As an example I asked the Zephyr trader his favorite coffee in stock in Kansas City and he said it was Costa Rica Herbazu at $4.10/lb. Well, that sounds fine and good until you have to buy a 69Kg bag for $625. $625! That's a lot of cash to fork out. Plus, how much would it cost to have 10# shipped to you? Roughly $58 ($4.10 + $0.50/lb + shipping). Sweet Marias sells the same 10# of Herbazu for $53.95 + shipping. Virtually the same amount. Therefore there is not much reason to do a bulk buy. Which really stinks for me because I was getting the last 20# or so of a big bag for less than a couple of bucks per pound. Now I'm paying over $6!!!!! DOH! CHAD Don't put the cart before the horse. Put the horse in the cart and listen to him say "weeeee" all the way down the hill.

Small quantities of top shelf stuff, you can make that work because the retail price point lets you get your money back. Small quantities of cheap stuff makes no sense at all. Shrub makes sense for medium quantities, because you also get the cupping scores, background of the farm, and that farm-gate feel-good. My 2 cents. -Scott Edited by freshbeans on 07/13/2011 08:36

CHAD so before shipping you are at 46, they are at 54. that $0.80 per pound cheaper, or 108 dollars per "big bag" ($0.80 * 135lbs). Seems to makes "cents" :) to me.. So if you were to buy 20lbs at your price and with the flat rate box @ 15 dollars you are essentially saving the shipping cost by buying through you vs Sweet Marias. Sun-swept beaches with a light wind blowing...

(2 movements ) For me to receive a shipment from my broker in NY, then distribute out to end users represents 3 movements. My guess would be that it would increase the cost by the amount of the second move. For something rare or special, it would be worthwhile. -Scott

Clearly I hope you do not have to stop offering members that bag of special beans at a fair price and a decent profit for you as well. My two cents -- From here in Alabama, for various reasons, I aim for about 15 pounds per order. With S.M., that is $9. For USPS, that is $15. The difference is only $6, which isn't much when you consider some folks spend that much or more on fast-food every day. I don't try to justify my coffee-roasting hobby -- I'm content to rationalize it. :-)

Curly i expect that's true of beans that they are buying from distros but it seems to me that they are doing more and more exclusives that don't go through the sources that most other green bean retailers use (royal, cafe imports, zephyr). if i'm mistaken, please let me know. i've simply seen much, much more overlap among sellers like corral, burman, roastmasters, our coffee barn, etc. - with the largest difference being price and slight variation in what each may or may not stock.

I can attest to folks being out and about. Me and Julie were out hitting the garden centers for loading flower pots all day. Nice weather! Tomorrow the Kamado/egg gets fired up!
