I've been mulling over a bulk buy lately, but, frankly the coffee price is too high. As an example I asked the Zephyr trader his favorite coffee in stock in Kansas City and he said it was Costa Rica Herbazu at $4.10/lb. Well, that sounds fine and good until you have to buy a 69Kg bag for $625.
$625! That's a lot of cash to fork out. Plus, how much would it cost to have 10# shipped to you? Roughly $58 ($4.10 + $0.50/lb + shipping).
Sweet Marias sells the same 10# of Herbazu for $53.95 + shipping. Virtually the same amount. Therefore there is not much reason to do a bulk buy. Which really stinks for me because I was getting the last 20# or so of a big bag for less than a couple of bucks per pound. Now I'm paying over $6!!!!! DOH!

Yup, it's the shipping. One big bag=80.00$, plus another 20.00-30.00$ for each additional bag.
Small quantities of top shelf stuff, you can make that work because the retail price point lets you get your money back.
Small quantities of cheap stuff makes no sense at all.
Shrub makes sense for medium quantities, because you also get the cupping scores, background of the farm, and that farm-gate feel-good.
My 2 cents. -Scott

so before shipping you are at 46, they are at 54.
that $0.80 per pound cheaper, or 108 dollars per "big bag" ($0.80 * 135lbs). Seems to makes "cents" :) to me..
So if you were to buy 20lbs at your price and with the flat rate box @ 15 dollars you are essentially saving the shipping cost by buying through you vs Sweet Marias.

perhaps I have misread this thread.
chad is saying he cannot do it for the same price as SM; Sean says Chad says/thinks he can so who/what are we actually talking about here.
who has the BEST price point for the same bean?
is it worth it for the little guy, Chad in this case, to do it? am I correct in
saying Chad says no it it not?
is this the same bean? Chad is your bean the same one hat Sweet Maria sells?
bean buyers want to know. my thoughts are that you could get some moola up front from all of us bean-o-freaks; you still have to buy it, get it, break it up and ship it. you have mentioned before your price per pound for doing this for HRO and our buyers. with inflation and the cost of beans going up is the cost for you the same or has that gone up as well?
thanks. I am asking because I think the last few posts may have left the casual/first time buyer of your bulk buy with questions.
thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

just thinking out loud about bulk buys. when I buy in bulk I have actually sold the roasted beans, pre-ship buy on a big bag-o-beans

I might be interested in buying beans and selling them to you folks. I'm always buying beans so it would be no problem buying more.

One issue is the third shipment. SM receives large shipments, then sells to the end user. (2 movements )
For me to receive a shipment from my broker in NY, then distribute out to end users represents 3 movements.
My guess would be that it would increase the cost by the amount of the second move.
For something rare or special, it would be worthwhile.

I agree. there are some of us who can and do offer great beans to members and that's what makes it all worth your effort and our great buys. Clearly I hope you do not have to stop offering members that bag of special beans at a fair price and a decent profit for you as well.
Each of you have a special knowledge that we all enjoy and have the advantage of using on these special buys for members.
don't stop. we all know prices go up.

Hi Opus, let us know how your Mexican tastes - I really liked the Oaxaca in years past.
My two cents -- From here in Alabama, for various reasons, I aim for about 15 pounds per order. With S.M., that is $9. For USPS, that is $15. The difference is only $6, which isn't much when you consider some folks spend that much or more on fast-food every day.
I don't try to justify my coffee-roasting hobby -- I'm content to rationalize it. :-) |

For me it's not a matter of profit. It's about the value for the end user.
I can't out- perform something like SM because of the second move.

So with tongue in cheek I wont stir the pot and ask you to send some to Australia :P
Prices in AU are around $12 to $14 per KG for good quality beans + delivery
Some places give free delivery for orders of 5kg or over
Cup Of Excellence (COE) and speciality coffee can be from $35 kg to $100 kg green

$12~$14 per KG sounds like a pretty good price to me KK. You're closer to the action!

Some of the more exotic beans can be a few dollars more up to low $20s
Check out one of the local AU green bean suppliers

SM gets their beans through a broker just like the rest of us. I have seen the receipts. It's the volume on shipping that they are saving. 1 bag or one pallet ships pretty much the same cost.

So there it is. Value gets lost in the(small lot) shipping. Still worth it for nice stuff though. -Scott |

i expect that's true of beans that they are buying from distros but it seems to me that they are doing more and more exclusives that don't go through the sources that most other green bean retailers use (royal, cafe imports, zephyr). if i'm mistaken, please let me know. i've simply seen much, much more overlap among sellers like corral, burman, roastmasters, our coffee barn, etc. - with the largest difference being price and slight variation in what each may or may not stock. |

Take a look at Peter's GCBC offerings for a breakdown of costs.
I think he does it for fun.

I take $.50 per pound for my time/packaging. So, yeah, for fun and to keep my coffee prices down.
