I know, how generic can I possibly be?
I've been using Fresh Roast coffee roasters since, I'd like to say, 2000. My oriiginal Fresh Roast croaked about 2 years ago and I broke out my FR+8 that I received as a gift when I thought the FR was on its last legs. The FR+8 is being unpredictible (I need to take it apart and mess with it some I think)
In the meantime, I'm thinking about upgrading to something a little bigger/fancier. I'm not much of a tinkerer so I'm not looking to build a frankenroaster right now. I'd like to be able to do bigger batches and I've upped my budget to $300.
I have been looking at the "out of stock" Behmor and have read a lot of positive things about it. I also am intrigued by the Gene Cafe, but can only afford a used model. And of course the higher end fancy schmancy models are but a pipe dream right now.
So if anyone is upgrading and would like to find a good home for ol' Bessie, please let me know. |

Ok, you are looking for a larger batch roaster, yes?
You don't tinker but will take apart your Fresh Roast?
I am asking because I know someone with a torn down Hot Top, I think it is a second generation, that needs a 120 buck board, could be less for the board.
I know it's clean and all the parts are there because i was going to take it as a second roaster.
Is that something you would be interested in?
I will check to see if it is still on the market.
My very 1st roaster, in 2002, was an original Fresh Roast that I have forever called the birthday gift from hell...
You may want to look here http://koffeekosm.../. Paul is one of our admins who has done a great job on his complete kit roaster. You may already have some of the stuff so you would need only parts to complete a great roaster.

Tinker? Yes, I do tinker. I was just thinking about some of the home roaster projects I've seen that sometimes include things "then I spot welded these two pieces together" LOL Taking something apart to fix a loose connection doesn't come close.
Ooh, a Hot Top? That catches my interest. I've heard quite a few good things about them but they're so $$$ that I wasn't even going to really look at them. Depends on what is needed to get it going and what they're asking (if they still are).
Right now I'm borrowing my mom's Melitta Aromaroast (bought it cuz I thought she'd be into roasting and its been sitting on a shelf since then) but haven't fired it up yet. I was actually considering going to wallyworld and getting a hot air popper to tide me over.
So yeah, I'd love some more info on the HT. |

Just sent my friend a note re HT. I know it needs a new board that is well within your range.
He was virtually going to make it a give away...
I know he took it totally apart to clean and never put it back together again. He simply bought a new one...
if I remember correctly he wanted ship cost plus a bit.

Hi:
Have not heard back yet e HT but I have a question?
Where do you roast? Have you ever considered a drum
roaster.
The type you use with a BBQ?

I have thought about it but the PITA aspect is a bit high. You see, I am a "charcoal snob" and grill with a webber kettle grill (just becasuse I haven't gotten a "big green egg" yet). I don't think it would be too hard to rig a drum and hand crank, I'm not sure I can do the heat managemnt for coffee well (I do grill a mean steak though). Its different techniques than for food and a new learning curve.
I have also thought about heat gun and heat resistant bowl. I've been reading a lot of the "home roasting rigging" type articles since I decided I needed a new roaster and while I love some of the creativity, it's just not where I am right now. I would have been better at that a couple years ago before my roomie moved out, she's a lot more build and rig than I am and I think between the two of us, we could have come up with a beast to be proud of.
(this was a cool build I read about on CG: http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/homeroast/539025?LastView=1335563668&Page=3 scroll about half way down. It wasn't cheap but it's a beautiful piece of work)
Oh, and I'm an outside roaster. The vent over the stove probably hasn't worked in 30 years so I"m limited to roasting when its not raining or too cold (Philadelphia area). Or too windy. |

No hurry, no worry. I appreciate you going to the effort!!
I was looking at the roaster I borrowed from my mom and it's gonna take some rigging to make it worth trying. So even if she tried it, she never would have gotten into roasting!

It's kind'a funny. My original budget was $200 with the intention of getting another Fresh Roast (since my first one lasted 10 years. That my second one lasted 2 not withstanding). But, I started to consider a Behmor and upped my budget. But they weren't available, selling out as fast as they came in stock.
So I went to eBay and won a Gene Cafe roaster from Blue Mountain Coffee. But their shipping is super slow (slow boat from El Salvadr) so I kept my options open. Then I found a hottop on craigslist for not much more than what I paid for the GC and it's sitting in my dining room waiting for me to try it out.
From what I've heard of Hottop, I did really well, getiting one for not much more than a new Behmor. I've heard really great things about it here and on Coffee Geek so I'm looking forward to learning it. You'll be seeing me in the Hottop topics soon!!!
Thank you for your assistance and support! |

Sorry to be so late replying, been busy.
Looks like it could use a good cleaning. Probably filters too.
I figured for what I paid for it, I was willing to take the risk.
