This roaster would be absolutely perfect for someone who knows what they are doing. I don't, which is why I want to sell it. I cannot get a good roast out of it, and I'd rather get a Behmor that's a little more foolproof.
I've had this one for less than a month. I've put probably 30 roast through it. It works the same as when I bought it, which, like I said, would probably be good for someone a little more experienced than I am.
Anyway, $400 obo.

My first roaster was a GC. I have since begun roasting with a HotTop, and I am very impressed with both the roaster and the roasts. I would encourage you to look for a used HT (as I did) if you possibly can... you will not regret it. Ciel

The HotTop sounds exactly like the opposite of what I want. From SweetMarias: "Roasting with the HotTop takes an extra effort: you need to understand the sights, sounds and smells of the coffee roasting process to get the best results." I don't know any of that. I'd much rather have something simple.

I think you'll find the Behmor even more confusing. It's not as simple as it's made out to be.
For larger quantities, buy a heat gun, a woden spoon and a stainless steel dog bowl.

My boss has one, and she says it's much easier to use than the way I describe the Gene Cafe (plus her beans look and taste good).
I hesitate to sour up my sale here, but I've tried and tried and wasted a bunch of money on beans, and it's not getting any better. I've tried your suggestions. I've downloaded Eddie's roast logs. No matter what I do, I get an inconsistent looking and tasting bean as a result, and I'm fed up with it.
Obviously the Gene Cafe works for some people, but I think it would be much better for someone who knows more about roasting in general. Maybe the power in my house fluctuates too much, I have no idea.
I do know one thing, though, I'm way beyond frustrated at this point, and it's time to try something new.

In my experience, the above statement applies to my GC more than it does to my HT; I know because I have roasted with both units side by side.
The used HT I got is a programmable model, so my roasting could be as easy as simply pushing a button, and letting the HT do all the work automatically, including dumping and cooling the beans, ready for grinding. However, I prefer using the HT in manual mode. The HT is very easy to use in manual mode because you can easily hear the subtle sounds of roasting, and easily monitor the rising temperature in the bean mass.
In my experiences to date, the single most important variable for successful roasting has been knowing the temperature of the bean mass, and the HT allows you to monitor that for perfect roasting results.

you are giving up way too quickly.
please stop, take a breath and buy some garbage beans. hell I will send you some not garbage beans that you cannot roast wrong.

I appreciate it, ginny :)
However, I threw up an ad on eBay at the same time I posted this. To my surprise, it has already sold.
I just saw that you suggested I should call Maria and ask for another machine... I never really considered that it would be defective. I hope it's not. I guess I'll offer to replace it for this guy if it actually is defective.
Anyway. I'll a lot more researching, and maybe I will buy a HotTop. I'm definitely not going to give up on roasting. Thank you all for your help.

I have a hypothesis that might explain why Adam's GC sold so quickly on eBay. I've surmised that John took swift steps to purchase it incognito... Do some of you recall the avid interest John expressed in this CG earlier? :smiley-837.gif:

John, I had been under the impression that you had 3 roasters; now it looks more like 4. Am I even close? :)

Does each get its turn... or are you partial to one in particular?

The JYTT 1K is back on the bench for re-working, so I don't use it.
I use the Gene Cafe most of all.
I bought a case of six Fresh Roast 8s when I saw they were being discontinued. They are excellent little roasters and I've passed three of them on to start up home roasters. In the event you notice the math, my count is at four because I still have my first one that started me on this long road.

Am I correct in assuming that the JYTT 1K was your creation?
Can you point me to an earlier post with good photos?

Thanks! Yes, I do. My steel work is an off-shoot of my sculpture. It looks good, but I'm not as skilled at this kind of precision work as it may appear. But it's fun! I envy the shops and skills of many here on HRO.

Wow! John, I am impressed by your skills, and those of other HRO members. It is a humbling experience to find myself in such great company.
