My RK Drum roaster
Vince
Greetings all!
I am new here. I just built an RK Drum because I wanted to be able to roast more than 8oz at a time. I may have gone a bit overkill but that is usually my mode of operation. Anyway, I am posting a link to a few shots and Ginny wanted to point out my bean cooler. I found an 18" flour sieve from a bakery equipment company that cost $US35.00 to accomodate what I figured a few pounds of beans would need and then I needed something to put it in. I bought a 47quart plastic flower pot from Home Depot for $12.00 and just cut a hole in it with a hole cutting blade for installing door knobs. I put some masking tape (couldn find the duct tape) around the bottom because the pot has 4 small holes in the bottom for water to drain. I already had the shop vac and the 2.5 inch hose fits snuggly in the hole with a little persuasion. The beans cool very quickly.
Here are the links:

The sieve:

The flower pot was like this only big enough for an 18" sieve. I amsure you can go smaller with the sieve and the pot and do just as well.

Hope this helps!

Great cooler idea dude. Everybody seems to post great roaster ideas meanwhile no one remembers you gotta cool those beans to.smile

Very nice set up! s:2 s:1 Grin
Please tell me how do you remove the chaff?
Does the vacuum force air up from the bottom?

Thanks,

Peter,

The chaff mostly falls out of the drum onto the griddle plate or into the firebox while roasting and I just zap it with my compressor (being in the garage doorway and all...does make for a convenient place to roast) and the vacuum is sucking and holds the chaff that is left over as I stir the beans. I really just spread them evenly with my "Ove Glove" and they are cool in under 2 minutes. I then scoop up the beans and take the sieve out and zap it with the air hose or tap it aganst the fence and it blows away. (there isnt much left)
I was surprised but chaff has not been an issue for me at all, so far

At some point between French and fire, it really doesn't matter much what the "origin character" of the coffee was ...
