My first roaster, actually it took more than one to keep things going for a couple of years was, the Zach&Dani's/'Nesco Professional'. "Prorfessional', not even close. I have no idea how they had the nerve to even suggest this POS had any 'Professional' qualities. However, by attaching the heating element to a variable-autotransformer, I could make very good coffee, 280 grams at a time. But, the tiny heating elements would only last about nine months when pushed into their useful heat range (550 watts), and The Mental Ware Corp has no desire to work with do-it-yourself nerds. I think I purchased a total of four, used, Z&D/Nesco units for about two years worth of parts.

I remember those advertisements. They were advertising on TV a lot. I almost went for it. Who knows, I might have been a home roaster years before. Or I may have been disappointed, and never tried again. Ken in NC --------------

"I almost went for it." I didn't get any roaster. I didn't roast until I found this group about the same time I found SM. I just thought that their advertisements were very good at the time and almost got me to buy one. But, I didn't. Very little compares to what I roast now. Ken in NC --------------

Quote Scott - The coffee was quite good. The roaster was over-powered during the drying and finish phases, and under-powered during the 'ramp-to-first-crack' phase. But the 'boosting' Variac solved that problem. However, I must say today's cup of fluid-bed roasted, Rwanda - Mushonyi Washing Station was better than anything from the Z&D...except, maybe one batch of 'blueberry bombs from the 2010 crop of 'Natural Process' Panama Elida...
