No matter how fine a grind I use the water passes thru the coffee too rapidly, about 12 seconds. I have two grinders, a Baratza Encore and a virtuoso. Even on a setting of 0 and a firm tamp the extraction is still too short. Been progressively worsening the past months. Water seems to be very hot, the water maybe is coming out too much when I look at the group head with the porta filter off, not sure. I used to be able to pull a quad shot in about the optimal time around 25 seconds. Not sure if I can repair this since I have no idea what the problem is. So expensive to pay for shipping fees to have it repaired somewhere. The unit is about 4 years old. Thanks. Possibly overloading basket? never was a problem before....perplexed. |

The Virtuoso should be a decent grinder for espresso range grinding. A few things come to mind... -How fresh is the coffee? As stale coffee will give you nothing but a thin/diluted/quick extraction. -Have you checked to see if you have flow from the OPV? You can check it by looking at the shorter hose in the reservoir while running the pump with a blind basket in the portafilter. If the OPV is functioning properly you should get a steady flow from that hose. Running it like this won't hurt a thing UNLESS the OPV is stuck closed and you will know immediately because the pump will get real quiet and of course no flow from that hose. If this is the case that will force all the pressure/flow through the puck/basket, leaving you with a fast extraction when you're in espresso mode. |

What kind of porta filter bottomless, single etc? what size? how much coffee you using in it? You should be able to choke the machine with coffee no matter what the pump is doing in my experience. I have used all the above grinders, still do I actually use a vario for my espresso. Have you checked your screen in your group head? Is your tamper sized for your filter basket? I have had those maddening things with making espresso I feel your pain. Hopefully you got it figured out by now. "friends dont let friends drink bad coffee"
