Quote mg512 wrote: It's a slight gamble, but you could look for a used Gaggia Classic on eBay or similar. I once bought one for under 100$ that was listed as "defective" but just needed a good descale. To piggyback on this, If you are a moderately handy person, searching "espresso machine" on eBay, selecting "for parts or not working" will get you the best deals I bet you can find. My sister actually threw away her Starbucks barista espresso machine that only needed a descale, sadly she didn't even let me know. And if it's a reputable company and machine, you could find parts for it easily, if it needed more than a descale. In fact, now this search will be in my daily routine, thanks mg512 for the reminder! Now I'm surely going broke! haha Roaster: Hottop-P, Hottop B-2 FS, Artisan 6M in red FS, SR800 FS. Someday:Bullet. Sold: Nesco CR-04-13, Poppery II
Grinder: DF64, 1Zpresso JX-Pro, Grindmaster 835s Brew Methods: BV1900TS, BMW espresso machine, Aeropress, Chemex, V60, French press. |

I tried Sage Barista Express Espresso Machine from this website. Once you set the fineness of the grind and the amount required, get the compaction pressure right you get as good as any well known outlet can supply. Some reviews comment on the noise of the water pump but this assured me all is working and Im not worried by that. The Steam to hot water dispenser selection knob is plastic and its job is quite demanding. |

A coffee style that has been around for centuries is Greek / Turkish All you need is an ibrik and a heat source and the super fine ground coffee Once you learn how to brew this style of coffee - you are then drinking the original first coffee style And the ibrik is cheap, easy to wash, take it camping ect I have posted the brew method in another thread KK I home roast and I like it. I think the way to go is used. I am got lucky and found a Gaggia Classic Pro for $50 on Facebook marketplace. Only couple years old and works great. I see another machine in another state for $50 (Gaggia Coffee). A lot of people don't want to ship them so look locally. It might take a while to find a deal but they do come along. |

During the last two years since no post in this thread, a new machine emerged on some markets, and for me is worth considering against a lot others, for under $100 class. It's about the brand Staresso, their Mirage model, not the other models cheaper and more plastic. Mirage has all the critical parts, i.e. contact with water, made from stainless steel, and features a standard 53mm basket, with 22 grams capacity, that coupled with the 180 ml capacity of the tank, allows brewing two espresso, or a long coffee, in a single pass. The stock basket is pressurized, but the mount is flexible enough to allow change to other standard non-pressurized 51mm basket, or even a 49 mm Pavoni, with some tricks. There are also third party mods available for sale, as bottomless 51mm portafilter, or a lid replacement allowing pressure reading, and using a car tyre pump instead the default manual pump. Definitely the McGywer brew machine ! |

Nominally it's for the daughter's boyfriend but I'll have to make sure it works first :) |

Update: son says it makes acceptable expresso italian style, notably on a camping stove when the house power goes out. On a paranoid note: the company aggressively markets their other products in spam emails which lists everybody's address that bought one |

My first unit I was not sure I would like espresso, I waited for one of those Walmart local blow out sales about 3 days and bought a Delonghi ECP3120 $49.95 cad then I picked up a single wall basket from Amazon $15 cad. You remove the plastic at the bottom of the portafilter (One Screw) and now you are making espresso. So under $50 usd. You do need a grinder that can grind for Espresso, you can make some great Traditional Italian style shots on this thing but its a manual switch on front to run the pump with boiler/steam tip, requires a little practice. I still take it to work to showcase some of my coffee and I'm not ashamed of it one bit! |
